What about breastfeeding your baby for more than a year?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that mothers breastfeed for the first year and afterwards for as long as both mother and baby want to continue.

MyPyramid Plan for Moms covers nutritional needs for breastfeeding women from the baby’s birth up to 1 year. Nutritional needs for mothers who breastfeed more than one year will depend on the amount of breast milk produced plus the mother’s own needs.

If you continue breastfeeding for more than a year, you may want to consult with your health care provider. Ask if your MyPyramid Plan for Moms from 6 months to one year of the baby’s age is still right for you.

If you do not have a MyPyramid Plan for Moms yet and your baby is over 1 year old, enter any date within the past year as the birth date, to get a Plan. It will show recommendations for you when your baby was 6 months to one year of age. Ask your health care provider about following this Plan when continuing to breastfeed a baby over one year old.
